Local volunteers have been recognised for their work in improving the natural environment.

Stowey Green Spaces Group are absolutely thrilled to have received a ‘Highly Commended’ at the BBC Radio Somerset Make A Difference Awards. It recognises the work we’ve done over the years to improve and protect the natural environment in and around the Stoweys.

The good news came in September, when they were notified they’d been shortlisted. Out of around 500 nominations across eight categories, Stowey Green Spaces Group was one of just four finalists in the Environment category.

The group were invited into the BBC Radio Somerset studios in Taunton for an interview, and the volunteers were pleasantly surprised when they discovered that Sir Ashley Fox (MP for Bridgwater and Burnham) had put their name forward.

The buzz continued with an invitation to the awards night at Taunton’s Brewhouse Theatre on Sunday 20th September. Almost 400 people turned up to celebrate the individuals and groups who are genuinely making a difference in their communities.

The evening was memorable, with the winners congratulated by several well-known faces from the worlds of TV and sport via video link. These included Deborah Meaden from Dragons’ Den, Apollo from Gladiators, former Olympic gold medallist Robin Cousins and Janette Manrara from Strictly Come Dancing.

Although they didn’t take home the top prize, winning a ‘Highly Commended’ trophy was a brilliant achievement and a real testament to the volunteers’ hard work and commitment.

From maintaining our local greens to helping nature to thrive, the group’s work is having a real positive impact on the places we all share. It’s a massive boost for everyone in the group and a great reminder of what a committed group of local people can achieve.

Stowey Green Spaces Group would like to thank everyone who supports our work and helps to make the Stoweys a greener, more attractive place for both people and wildlife.
