Nether Stowey Playing Fields Committee Receives Highly Commended Award at 2025 Somerset Playing Fields Awards
We are delighted to share that Ron Scales, representing the Nether Stowey Village Hall & Playing Field Committee, was presented with the Highly Commended Certificate at the 2025 Somerset Playing Fields’ Association (SPFA) Awards. The award was proudly presented by Mohammed Habedat Saddiq, Lord-Lieutenant of Somerset, during the ceremony held on Friday, 19th September in Woolavington.
The awards celebrate the dedication of parish councils and local volunteers who maintain outdoor recreation facilities to the highest standards. Nether Stowey’s recreation field was recognised for its excellent upkeep and its valuable contribution to the local community.
The SPFA, a registered charity, has spent over 80 years supporting communities across Somerset. Its mission is to ensure people of all ages and abilities can enjoy quality recreational spaces, from safe playgrounds for children to sports fields for the wider community. Contrary to popular belief, most of Somerset’s playing fields are not managed by local authorities but by parish councils and volunteer groups, often on land gifted or raised through local fundraising efforts.
Through advice, support services, and safety management programmes, the SPFA helps communities maintain these invaluable local assets, campaigns to protect them from redevelopment, and assists in establishing new facilities. The recognition of Nether Stowey’s playing field highlights the vital role local volunteers play in keeping these spaces thriving.
Ron Scales and the committee’s hard work ensure that Nether Stowey residents continue to have access to safe, welcoming, and high-quality outdoor spaces—a true testament to community spirit.
